Applications for exemption from poll tax, 1918-1966.

Alabama required a poll tax to be paid by all voters over 21 and under 45 years of age until it was ruled invalid in 1966. Certain voters (such as World War I veterans, the disabled, and active military personnel) were exempt from paying the state poll tax upon application to the probate judge (see Ala. Code 51-238 [1958 Recompiled]). This series consists of application forms and provides the name of applicant, date, and a statement of military service. This record began in ca. 1918 and was discontinued in 1966.
